CONTINUED ► Emily and Vincent both worked in the entertainment business. Emily was an agent for a well-known musician, while Vincent produced movies. So from an early age, Laina was influenced by their careers. First, she wanted to be just like her mother. Then her father. Then she decided she wanted to be an actress, and stuck with that. Her parents supported her dream; since they were both in the 'business', they could probably help her out if needed. But Laina wanted to do this on her own, not be one of those kids with their parents as their agents. That, Laina thought, was stupid. So of course that led to her rebellion. How she thought 'rebelling' against her parents about something so stupid was a good idea, no one could really know. Honestly, Laina doesn't understand it herself. One day, her parents pissed her off to the point that she decided she' would do something wild; get a tattoo. She got "dream is if you'll live forever" across her upper back in elegant lettering. Her parents were furious, but not at her--themselves. The next week, she added the second part across her lower back ("live as if you only have today")--that's when her parents grounded her. How Laina was actually able to get the tattoos without parent permission was unknown to they (she totally went to a place where she heard they didn't ask). Another couple months went by, and Laina did the craziest thing yet. She got a corset piercing; a set of piercings along her right side that, when ribbon was laced through it, would look like the strings of a corset. Laina loved it, and for once, she didn't show her parents. She figured that'd be a bit...too much. And then Emily and Vincent died. They were in a car crash with a semi-truck; a freak accident as people would say. For a while, Laina could barely function. She was stricken with guilt that it was somehow her fault. Maybe, if she didn't act the way she did, they wouldn't have been in that car...no, it wasn't her fault. Laina hated the thought of being alone; she barely talked to her brother and he didn't even come home for the funeral. Her parents were gone; the only family that loved her were in heaven (or hell, but she hoped not). With no where else to go, Laina was forced to go live with her rich Aunt Elsa. Sure, Aunt Elsa was nice, but she buried herself in her work, writing a new book every year, it seemed. Her Aunt showered her with gifts: clothes, makeup, basically whatever she wanted. But not what she needed, as cheesy as it sounds: love. Eventually, being unable to really care for Laina, Aunt Elsa sent her to the Academy for Elaborate Arts. She figured she'd make some friends and get over her parents death, while being at a nice art-related school. </div> |
